Rajasthan Festivals
An
astute traveler looks for festivals to attend while they're visiting India.
While in India the name Rajasthan, invokes images of a most vibrant city,
romance, valor, colorful attires, affable people and of course several
festivals through out the year. If you really want to experience Rajasthani
Culture and tradition like the Local people then attend local festivals.
Both the men and women of all the generations participate in these festivals
with equal enthusiasm. Some of the prime features of these festive days are
include decoration of houses, bazaars, religious places; processions -
elephant marches, camel marches; rituals, delicious food dishes etc. During
the festival season you can see several cultural performances by the local
entertainers, fairs and some exciting sports. Some of the most popular festivals of Rajasthan are:
» Nagaur Fair (Jan-Feb.) : Every year in Jan- Feb a popular animal fair is held in Nagaur. A large number of domestic animals are being traded in this fair. Apart from the serious business this fair also sees many activities including sports, competitions, roadside fair, entertainment by local performers etc.
» Desert Festival, Jaisalmer (Jan-Feb.) : If you're traveling Rajasthan during the months of Jan- Feb, then you will be able to witness one of the most popular festivals of Rajasthan. This cultural festival has several competitions like camel races and turban tying, traditional folk music, dance performances.
» Baneshwar Fair, Baneshwar (Jan-Feb.) : This religious festival celebrates with simple and traditional rituals. This fair is the centre attraction of of Gangaur Festival. A large number of tribals from the neighboring states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat also join their brethren from Rajasthan in offering prayers to Lord Shiva.
» Gangaur, Jaipur (March-April) : This festival is
dedicated to the Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. During the
festival young girls, all dressed up in their finery and pray for grooms of
their choice. Married women pray for the well-being of their husbands. This
18-day festival is adorned with various activities. This festival ends with
a grand procession marking the arrival of Shiva to escort his bride home.» Pushkar Fair, Ajmer (November) : Pushkar Fair is the most famous and most participated festival of Rajasthan. Pushkar, an important pilgrimage, at that time becomes the venue of mammoth cattle fair. The fair is accompanied by great many activities including auctions, entertainments by local artists, sports, camel races, animal musical chairs, 'laadoo oonths' etc.
Apart from these main festivals there are many more festivals you can enjoy which include Mewar Festival, Elephant Festival, Urs Ajmer Sharif, Summer Festival, Camel Festival etc.
